ABOUT THE NWFA

The NWFA was formed in August, 2000 by well known sports and entertainment entrepreneur, Catherine Masters. Masters, who has more than 25 years experience in the top levels of these industries, decided it was time for women to have the chance to play full contact football in a well organized and professionally run league. Starting with two teams, the Nashville Dream and the Alabama Renegades, the league held a pre-season showcase of six games. This pre-season ran from October 14, 2000 until December 2, 2000. The pre-season was a rousing success with thousands of fans in the stands and incredible support from the media worldwide.

In the years that followed, the NWFA expanded to include over 40 teams from Maine to Florida and from Baltimore to the West Coast and everything in between. In addition to adding many new markets, the NWFA also negotiated a deal with well known Hollywood Producer and Director, Joel Raatz, to participate in the first ever, GENDER BOWL, The Gender Bowl was the first time men and women competed against one another on the football field. The huge success of Gender Bowl I has created a lot of interest and support for a GENDER BOWL II, which will be produced again by Mr. Raatz and the NWFA.

The NWFA has added several exciting new partners including Brainpads, an innovative mouthpiece which is designed to lessen the amount of concussions. “The safety of our players is very important to us and these companies will certainly help us in that area,” Masters states. The league has also joined with Women's Sports Cares to promote and market its teams and most recently formed a partnership with SUNCASTV to broadcast NWFA games and videos on the internet. In addition to the above, the NWFA has opened a massive retail store on the internet with more than 25,000 items available. The store can be found at www.cafepress.com/nwfashop.

The NWFA has also been the subject of many feature stories and articles in more than 250 major publications and TV networks including the The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, CBS Evening News, The NBC Today Show, The New York Times, Nickelodeon, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post and many, many local and regional networks and publications.

In 2006, the NWFA created the slogan, “Baby, Look At Us Now”, which is a continuation of the highly popular and extremely successful, “You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby”. which helped launch the rise of women’s professional sports.
